Sheridan County

Perhaps no spot in Nebraska is so surrounded by historical and geographical landmarks as this one. Northwest of Hay Springs, NE are the sites of Spotted Tail Agency and Camp Sheridan. Named for Brule Sioux Chief Spotted Tail, the agency was built in 1874 to supply treaty payments, including food, clothing, weapons, and utensils, under the terms of the 1868 Fort Laramie Treaty. The army established Camp Sheridan nearby to protect the agency. A similar arrangement prevailed for the Ogalala Sioux at Red Cloud Agency and Camp Robinson forty miles west. Spotted Tail Agency was generally quiet and peaceful throughout the Indian War of 1876-77. Camp Sheridan, with a peak garrison of seven companies of soldiers, was abandoned on May 1, 1881. Nebraska Historical Marker - Historical Land Mark Council

Local Communities

Hay Springs, Nebraska is named for the hay production from the valley located directly to the east. Established in 1885 when the railroad was extended to that point. Population of 570 by the latest census. There has been a resurgence of commerce with new businesses recently added.

Chadron, Nebraska is the location of Chadron State College offering educational opportunities, cultural & athletic events. Chadron’s amenities include shopping, restaurants, coffee shops & a community hospital providing health care services to the region.  

Airports

The Chadron Municipal Airport (CDR) is located 5 miles west of

Chadron, NE, or 25 miles west of Hay Springs, NE on State Hwy 20.

Commercial flights are provided by Southern Air with services

 to Denver International Airport (DIA).

The Rapid City Regional Airport (RAP) is located 8 miles southeast of

Rapid City, SD & offers flights from Allegiant, American, Delta & United
